Hola compadres de MinneSNOWta! I am currently writing you from Sotogrande International School. Today was our first Monday in SIS and I can promise you that students from Spain are just as susceptible to catching a case of the Mondays as you back home! There were several complaints about homework today, but I guess that is universal! But overall it was a fantastic day filled first day of the week.
Turning back time a bit, on October 29th we had our first full day in Spain…almost. Due to the high levels of jet lag among our crew we did not roll out of our hibernation until around 11:30. This was very uncharacteristic for all in our group, but very necessary. We started off this day by having a typical American breakfast of cereal then decided to go out for a little exploration of Estepona.
For this operation we were required to split up into two teams. One team explored the close perimeter around our apartment (the walkers) and another team (the joggers) explored the less seen countryside of Estepona. The walking team discovered places to pick up food (Super Sol) and investigated the residential areas of the city. The jogging team ran out into the beautiful rolling hills of Estepona. This group examined the diverse vegetation, that had a variation of bamboo, and also met some wild life creatures on their adventure, dogs and horses. This group also learned where the boardwalk is located, bus stops, and a few restaurants. All in all, both teams learned a lot about our surrounding areas and passed information to each other in a meeting session held in the agua conference room (the pool).
After some much needed rest from our exploration adventures, the 7 of us got back together for some home cooked pasta with red sauce, garlic bread, and gourmet dessert…. Oreos! We ate this fabulous meal on the deck of one of our apartments for a great atmosphere to match our thought-provoking conversations about our expectations for the rest of our time in Spain.
To wrap up a wonderful first full day in Spain, we went for a walk out on the town. We walked along the costal city streets taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the Mediterranean Night. This included several small restaurants, an ocean breeze, music, and some cat ladies! It turns out that Spaniards also like to get pretty dressed up for Halloween. After finishing our second exploration of Estepona, we all decided to head back to our rooms to cap off a wonderful first day in the South of Spain.
Hasta Pronto,
Drew Ingvalson
